Instrument scientist (Postdoc) for the design and operation…

Firma: Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon
Rodzaj pracy: Pełny etat

Reference code: _2 - 2024/WP 3 Commencement date: as soon as possible Work location: Hamburg Application deadline: July 7th, 2024 Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon operates an outstation at DESY in Hamburg in order to provide access to highly brilliant synchrotron radiation within its German Engineering Materials Science Centre (GEMS). At the PETRA III synchrotron radiation source, Hereon jointly operates the High Energy Materials Science Beamline (P07/HEMS), the White Beam Engineering Materials Science Beamline (P61 A/WINE), the Imaging Beamline (P05/IBL), and the Nanofocus Endstation of Micro- and Nanofocus X-ray Scattering Beamline (P03/MINAXS) along with supporting laboratories. The techniques offered at diffraction beamline P07 have a strong focus on engineering materials science. The unique flux at high photon energies promotes novel applications of scanning small- and wide-angle scattering techniques, fast in-situ measurements as well as high spatial resolution. DESY will replace PETRA III by the next generation synchrotron source PETRA IV in the coming years (). The beamline P07 will not change its position; thus, the successor beamline does not require a full construction, but shall be optimized. Within this framework, we are looking for a person with experience in the design and operation of high-energy synchrotron beamlines for upgrading and operating the P07 successor beamline at PETRA IV. The appointment is initially limited to 3 years and may be extended. Equal opportunity is an important part of our personnel policy. We would therefore strongly encourage qualified women to apply for the position. Your tasks optimizing the beamline concept and optical components with respect to the best exploitation of the beam properties of PETRA IV commissioning and managing the beamline after the start of PETRA IV further development of sample environments and diffraction techniques supporting the P07 team during the design and construction phase of the successor beamline carrying out research within the framework of our R&D program publishing results and presenting them at national and international conferences Your profile university degree and PhD in physics, materials science or a related discipline experience with the design and operation of a synchrotron beamline experience with high-energy X-ray diffraction for engineering materials research, experience with SAXS will be an asset experience with X-ray optical components (e.g. lenses, monochromators) programming skills in Python excellent communication skills excellent oral and written English skills, good German language skills For questions, contact Dr. Peter Staron (). We offer you an exciting and varied job in a research centre with more than 1,000 employees from around 60 nations a well-connected research campus and best networking opportunities individual opportunities for further training social benefits according to the collective agreement of the public service and remuneration an excellent technical infrastructure and modern workplace equipment 6 weeks holiday per year; company holidays between Christmas and New Year's Day very good compatibility of private and professional life through offers of mobile and flexible work free assistance program for employees (EAP) Corporate Benefits a varied offer in the canteen on campus Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon conducts cutting-edge international research for a changing world: Around 1,000 employees contribute to the tackling of climate change, the sustainable use of the world's coastal systems and the resource-compatible enhancement of the quality of life. From fundamental research to practical applications, the interdisciplinary research spectrum covers a unique range. Institute of Materials Physics The Institute of Materials Physics operates instruments on large-scale equipment for structural investigations of materials and works on the development and characterization of novel lightweight materials for high-temperature applications, for example in aircraft turbines and automotive engines. Hereon has a unique infrastructure for complementary materials research with photons and neutrons. Interested? Then we are looking forward to receiving your comprehensive application documents (cover letter, CV, transcripts, certificates and list of publications etc.) indicating the reference number 2024/WP 3 until July 7th, 2024. Apply now Severely disabled persons and those equaling severely disabled persons who are equally suitable for the position will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.
